For hundreds of years, people have smoked tobacco in one form or another. Native American Indians, however, have used Pipe tobacco on this particular continent since prior to the European groups that came to North America. To most, the plant of tobacco was sacred. Members of the tribe smoked the leaves they had dried, in peace pipes, in concluding trading deals or while ceremonies were happening. Shamans or Medicine men would use tobacco for inducing visions as well as easing minds into a meditating way of being. Children also smoked during certain occasions because it was so important spiritually. Much value was given to this plant by these indigenous tribal people. Native Americans also transported pouches containing the plant in the same way one might do so with money due to its extreme value as a trading commodity within the natives. They believed it to be a gift that their gods had given them and believed that their prayers to these gods would be received through the smoke.
In Southern areas, the Europeans used tobacco for a crop of cash. Over time, this was responsible for the massive industry that is known in our day. Before the cotton industry exploded, the primary crop for a lot of plantations was tobacco. This helped the American economy in a great way at that time. Over time, cigarettes were becoming the most popular form of smoking, although tobacco for pipes was still marketable as many settlers continued to use pipes. Tobacco was also used for rolling out cigarettes by hand. After the Civil War, cigarettes in packs had become much more the choice. These were being rolled by hand by workers in factories. There was difficulty in meeting the demands of consumers. The first machine built to roll cigarettes was invented by James Bonsack in 1880. This sent the tobacco industry skyrocketing.
It was found in the 20th century, that tobacco was a dangerous substance. Today, smokers are well aware of the associated risks of health. Studies concerning the scientific, started in the middle of the 1900's. Actually the plant is an herb belonging to the Nocotiana and is part of the nightshade genus which is known for its poison. Tobacco companies later were discovered to have crossbred plants, causing them to contain markedly high concentrating levels of nicotine. This had been a method of creating an even higher call for tobacco. When the FDA filed claims against the instigator, the way was paved for many lawsuits for people affected by the product.
